If you are a big chocolate lover, you will love this cake. This cake has everything you could ever ask for. First of all, it's heart shaped, secondly, it's chocolate cake and thirdly, it contains Smarties, Chocolate Fingers and Nutella!
Although this cake takes patience, it is simple to make and looks spectacular. It's the perfect cake for beginners to make for a friend's birthday or a romantic occasion.
Ingredients: For the cake:
200g Butter
4 Eggs (medium)
150g Self raising flour
50g Cocoa Powder
1 Teaspoon Baking Powder
1/2 Teaspoon Hazelnut essence (Optional)
For the Topping and Filling:
3 Packs Chocolate Fingers
8 Smartie Tubes
50g Nutella
Method:
Start be preheating your oven to 180C (170C for fan assisted ovens). Then grease two 20cm heart shaped sandwich tins. (You make want to check step 8 now)
Second cream together the butter and the sugar until light and fluffy.
Next beat in the eggs, whilst slowly sifiting in the flour and the cocoa powder. The add in the remainder of the ingredients and mix together thoroughly. I always use a wooden spoon to mix ingredients but an electric whisk will do the job quickly.
Next pour half the mixture into one sandwhich tin and the rest into the other, even out the mixture using the back of a large spoon.
Leave in the oven for 25-30 minutes, until the sponge springs back when pressed lightly. (You make want to check step 8 now)
Place both sponges on a cooling rack and allow to cool for at least 20 minutes before continuing.
Now lather a generous amount of Nutella on the top and sides of both sponges.
Now it's time to place the Smarties on the cake (this is the part which requires patience). It may help if you separate Smartie's into colours whilst the cake is in the oven.
Lastly place the Chocolate Fingers around the edges (this also tests your patience).
Shh tips... I suggest warming a slice up in the microwave for 30 seconds and serving with a spoonfull of vanilla icecream.
